Torana, Monaro, Kingswood and Commodore. Even those who don’t know very much about cars will be familiar with these iconic Holden car models, which have become part of Australian culture.
2016 marks 160 years since the Holden story began. From early beginnings as a leather and saddlery business – JA Holden and Co. of Adelaide – by 1948, the business had moved from horse power to motor power! On 29 November 1948, the prime minister of Australia, Ben Chifley, unveiled the first Holden, a family sedan named the 48-215 (FX) – Australia’s own car.
In recognition of 160 years of Holden, Australia Post is releasing, on 23 August, a licensed stamp pack as part of the Holden Heritage Collection. The attractive pack includes 48 $1 Map of Australia stamps, alongside photo tabs of 24 of the most popular Holden car models through the years. From the 1948 48-215 (FX) through to the iconic Holden Monaro of the 1960s, and from the cool 70s vibe of the 1976 Holden HX Sandman Panel Van to the 1995 Holden VS SS Commodore, which first launched in 1978 as the ‘ultimate family car’.
Released in time for Father’s Day, the collection will also include two postal and numismatic covers, with a specially produced 50c coin. The first cover features a 1968 HK Holden Monaro GTS and the second a 1953 FJ Holden, which was actually used as an Australia Post postal delivery van. These exclusive covers are limited to 8,000.
The Australia Post Holden Heritage Collection 160 Years of Holden stamp pack and postal and numismatic covers will be available from 23 August at participating Post Offices, online and via mail order on 1800 331 794, while stocks last.
